(November 9-12, 2016, Indianapolis, Indiana)
Close competition and emotional performances were hallmarks of the 2016
Bands of America Grand National Championships which showcased 112 marching bands
from 20 states. A whopping 100 bands competed in the two-day preliminary contest with 36 bands advancing to semi-finals. A tie for 12th place at semi-finals meant 13 bands earned
a coveted spot in finals. The close competition continued in finals, with Carmel H.S. (Indiana) and Avon H.S. (Indiana) earning a tie score for first place. Carmel H.S. ultimately received the title of Grand National
Champion based on having the higher general effect score. Dobyns-Bennett H.S. (Tennessee) and Castle H.S. (Indiana) soared to their first-ever appearance in finals, an achievement that became bittersweet when
a tragic car accident claimed the life of a Castle band member the next morning. Marching.com photographed bands throughout the week and presents here the 36 semi-finalist bands in order of appearance at semi-finals.
