Krewe of Argus Mardi Gras Day Parade logo Founded in 1972, the Krewe of Argus is the oldest Mardi Gras Day parade in Jefferson Parish, a suburb of New Orleans. The Krewe comprises more than 500 riders — male, female, and children — as well as guest celebrities. Marching bands are warmly welcomed in the family-friendly parade which attracts nearly 1 million spectators.

The parade route is approximately five miles long and travels on Veterans Boulevard in Metairie, Louisiana. Family-oriented spectators line the route to catch an assortment of specialty throws from the masked riders in elaborate costumes. In past parades, Argus has created special floats to honor the Armed Services and local celebrities such as artist George Rodrigue and his Blue Dog.

In the beginning, the Krewe honored as its Empresses such outstanding entertainment celebrities as Barbara Eden, Phyllis Diller, Shirley Jones, Loretta Swit, Connie Stevens, Cathy Lee Crosby, and several Miss Americas. More recent celebrity Grand Marshals have included Pat Sajak, Hota Kotb, Al Roker, Rachael Ray, Delta Burke and Steven Seagal. Argus now also crowns a King, Queen and Royal Court from its own membership to ride as royalty.

Argus was named after the God of Greek Mythology, Argus, the all-seeing with one hundred eyes. After Zeus ordered Argus' head to be cut off, his wife took the hundred eyes and put them on the tail of her peacock. This is why the peacock is the symbol of the Krewe of Argus.
